At the turn of the century, the town of Linton was renamed Delray after a community in Detroit. With settlers from the Bahamas, along with Japanese settlers from the adjacent Yamato farming colony, Delray became a community of diversity. The state of Florida chartered Delray as an unincorporated town in the Dade County area during 1911. Four years later Delray became part of Palm Beach County. In 1923 the oceanside and intracoastal area adjacent to the town of Delray was incorporated as Delray Beach. Four years later, the two communities merged into one named Delray Beach.
With Hollywood types and artists not welcome in the upper crust Palm Beach area, nearby Delray Beach soon became a haven for artists, entertainers, authors and sports figures in the mid 1920’s. A seasonal Artists and Writers Colony was established. These seasonal visitors allowed the Delray Beach community to prosper, especially during the hard times of the depression. The community soon became renowned as a resort town, as numerous homes, bungalows, apartment buildings and hotels were constructed featuring Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, Mission Revival, Monterey Colonial and Streamlined Modern designs.
During World War II, the Delray Beach area became the home of service personnel working at the nearby Boca Raton Army Airfield. After the war, many veterans from the war settled in Delray Beach.
Today the city of Delray Beach is a popular location for tourists as well as for its nightlife on the sprawling Atlantic Avenue in the downtown area of the city. Numerous restaurants and nightclubs, bars, art galleries and boutiques line the trendy area, which is popular and always hopping throughout the year.
Delray Beach is also a popular tennis and golf community. The Delray Beach Open is held annually at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. The Downtown Delray center has also hosted the Fed Cup, the Davis Cup, and the Chris Evert Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic. There are 2 municipal courts in the city, along with 18 private courses. The latter include the prestigious Delray Beach Golf Club, the Delaire Country Club and the Mizner Country Club.
