Boynton Beach, a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, is located south of Lake Worth and Palm Beach and just north of Delray Beach and Boca Raton. With a population of 78,000, Boynton Beach is the third largest city in Palm Beach County and is a principal city in the Miami Metropolitan area. The city’s history dates back 1894, when American Civil War Major Nathan Boynton of Michigan discovered the area. Impressed by the area’s year-round sunshine and breathtaking beaches, Boynton built the Boynton Hotel on land that is now the Boynton Beach Oceanfront Park. The very first settlers to the area that Boynton brought along with him from Michigan realized the potential of farming various fruits and vegetables that were native to the area but in the north. Crops such as pineapple, tomatoes, citrus fruit and mango were harvested by these Boynton Beach settlers and sent to other states, when Henry Flagler’s railroad began to run through the area in the late 1890’s. In 1898, two of the settlers: Fred S. Dewey and Byrd Spilman Dewey filed a petition in the Dade County Courthouse for the Town of Boynton. The area was incorporated in 1920 as the Town of Boynton. In 1941 the name was changed to Boynton Beach.

During the time of World War II in the 1940’s the population in Boynton Beach grew as military bases were built in surrounding areas of Palm Beach and Boca Raton. Boynton Beach also grew with many area farms and numerous milk dairies. After the war, agriculture grew in the Boynton Beach area, until the late 1960’s through the mid 1980’s, when e farms were sold to make way for residential communities and industry. Leisureville, one of the first 55+ communities in the region, was built on 450 acres of land in Boynton Beach in 1968. Motorola opened a plant in Boynton Beach in 1983, leading the way for other technology companies to follow.

Today the city of Boynton Beach is a popular residential and winter vacation home community. Numerous 55+ communities are located throughout the city in addition to Leisureville, including Valencia Homes, Discovery Village and Sea Meadow. Boynton Beach is also a popular golf community with over 100 courses in the city or nearby, including the Links at Boynton Beach, Pine Tree Golf Club and the Aberdeen Golf Club.

As the end of daylight saving time (DST) approaches for 2024, many Floridians are preparing to "fall back" by setting their clocks back one hour on Sunday, November 3. This annual ritual, established to save energy and make better use of daylight, has been the subject of extensive debate in Florida and across the U.S. In recent years, there have been numerous attempts to make DST permanent through legislation, notably the Sunshine Protection Act, proposed by Florida lawmakers.
