West Palm Beach, a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, is located just west of the island of Palm Beach across from the Lake Worth Lagoon. While Palm Beach Island holds the distinction of having some of the highest real estate valued homes in the nation, West Palm Beach holds the distinction of being one of the oldest cities in the state of Florida. A principal city of the Miami Metropolitan Area, West Palm Beach was incorporated as a city two years before Miami was incorporated in 1894. Today the city of West Palm Beach has a population of over 120,000 and it’s the 17th largest city in population in the state of Florida.

Two native American tribes: the Mayaimi and Jaega first lived in the area that is now West Palm Beach. Other Native American tribes from Alabama and Georgia, the Seminoles and Miccosukees moved into the area in the early 1800’s. All were driven out by three consecutive wars with European colonists, lasting through the late 1850’s. Settlers from different parts of nation began to migrate into the area in the 1860’s and 1870’s, growing tropical fruits and vegetables that would be transported north via the Indian River. During the 1890’s, Railroad magnate Henry Flagler formulated the West Palm Beach area as a community to house the servants working on the neighboring Palm Beach island. Flagler paid early settlers a sum of $45,000 for the city of West Palm Beach.

Prior to 1909, the city of West Palm Beach was part of Dade County. It became part of Palm Beach County in 1909 and grew rapidly in population in the years that followed. At the outset of World War II, the Palm Beach Airforce Base was constructed, bringing thousands of military personnel to the area. The city of West Palm Beach grew in populace after the war with the downtown area becoming the hub of the entire county. In fact, West Palm Beach became one of the nation's fastest-growing metropolitan areas during the 1950s. In the 1970’s Century Village, a retirement gated community for residents 55 years or over was built, bringing many retirees from the Northeast part of the nation to West Palm Beach.

The downtown West Palm Beach area remains popular today with numerous office and local government buildings lining the streets, along with the nightlife of Clematis Street. The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts and the Norton Museum of Fine Art add to the community’s cultural ambiance. West Palm Beach is also the home of the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, where both the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals play during spring training. West Palm Beach is also the home of the Palm Beach Zoo at Dreher Park as well as Lion Country Safari, a drive though safari and adventure park, located in the western area of the city.

This annual ritual, established to save energy and make better use of daylight, has been the subject of extensive debate in Florida and across the U.S. In recent years, there have been numerous attempts to make DST permanent through legislation, notably the Sunshine Protection Act, proposed by Florida lawmakers.
