Hobe Sound, an unincorporated community of Martin County that sits alongside the Florida Treasure Coast, is rich in heritage and scenic beauty. With a population of close to 15,000, Hobe Sound stretches 7.72 miles along the Atlantic Ocean and features four guarded beaches, including the Hobe Sound Public Beach as well Jonathan Dickinson State Park.
The area of Hobe Sound was originally settled in 1600’s by a Native American group who named the village Jaega. Spanish settlers soon moved in and recorded the village name as Jobe or Jove and the area, he named it Hobey. Parts of Hobe Sound were included in a land deal in the early 1800’s when Spain granted 12,000 acres to Don Eusebio. At the turn of the 19th Century, Henry Flagler’s railroad ran through Hobe Sound, creating an influx of jobs, tourism and new residents.
In the 1920’s, the community of Hobe Sound was projected to be a new film capital, where movies would be produced. The concept was to replicate a Greek inspired town to serve as a backdrop for the films. For a brief period, Hobe Sound was renamed “Picture City.” Streets with Greek names such as Zeus, Saturn, Mercury, Olympus, Athena and Mars soon appeared. After the Okeechobee hurricane in 1928 the concept collapsed, and the original Hobe Sound name was restored. However, the street names still remain in the Hobe Sound community.
T oday Hobe Sound is renowned for its lush beaches as well as its deep-channeled Intracoastal Waterways. The Treasure Coast community is also the home of the Hobe Sound Polo Club, which is a member of the US Polo Association. Numerous polo tournaments are held at the Hobe Sound club throughout the year.
Hobe Sound is also a popular golf community with over 88 public and private golf courses surrounding the area, including Medalist Village, a private golf community featuring courses designed by golf legend Greg Norman.
The community of Hobe Sound is also known for its Singing Christmas Tree at the Hobe Sound Bible College. This annual event takes place in early December and features the college choir in bleachers, singing Christmas hymns and re-enacting the Christmas story.
