Vero Beach, a city along the Atlantic seaboard on the Florida Treasure Coast is renowned for its rich heritage, abundant beaches, barrier islands and vast number of orange groves. Located 34 miles south of Melbourne and 78 miles north of West Palm Beach, Vero Beach is part of Indian River County, and is the second most populous city in the county. According to recent census data, Vero Beach has a population of close to 16,700.
The city of Vero Beach’s origin dates back to 1870, when Captain Allen W. Estes officially settled in the area. Three years later, the first land patent between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon was established. Interestingly, a Spanish treasure fleet wrecked off the coast of the Vero Beach area a century earlier in 1715. Almost all of the fleet floundered in a hurricane, leaving tons of gold and silver washing away on the Vero Beach shores.
In 1893 Henry Flagler’s East Coast Railway started to run through the area and in 1919, the town of Vero was chartered. Six years later the town officially became Vero Beach, when it switched from being part of St. Lucie County to Indian River County.
During World War II in 1942, 1,500 acres surrounding the Vero Beach Municipal Airport became the site of the Fort Pierce Naval Amphibious Training Base. Two decades later, Piper Aircraft moved their administrative and manufacturing operations to the Vero Beach area. The manufacturer is currently the largest private employer in Vero Beach and the entire Indian River County. The citrus industry and tourism make up the remainder of the commercial industry in Vero Beach.
Vero Beach is also the home of the Jackie Robinson Training Complex, a multi-sport training complex, which was named in 2019 to honor the legacy of the sports legend. The complex was previously named Dodgertown. It holds the distinction of being the first racially integrated spring-training center in the South.
The historic facility served as the Spring Training Facility for the Los Angeles Dodger until 2008, when the team moved their Spring Training to Arizona. Up until 2019, the camp was a year-round multi-purpose facility for athletes of all ages. In 2019, MLB assumed operation of the Vero Beach facility and renamed it to honor the baseball great.
Golf is also a popular recreational activity in the Vero Beach area with 35 golf courses, including the American and Vista Plantation Golf Clubs. The Vero Beach Outlets shopping mall, located just off of I-95 and State Road 60, features many of today’s top fashion brands. In addition, the historic Downtown Vero Beach has been newly revitalized, and features a wide array of boutiques, restaurants, art galleries and antique stores.
