Melbourne, a city in southern Brevard County, Florida with a population of 85,000, is renowned for its historic appeal, artistic culture, and excellent surfing. Situated 72 miles southeast of Orlando on the Florida Space Coast and north of the city of Palm Bay, Melbourne sits alongside the Indian River Lagoon. In fact, a large portion of Melbourne is located on the state’s mainland, while a portion of Melbourne is also located on a barrier island adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean.

The area’s first settlers arrived in the Melbourne area in the late 1870’s. Originally called Crane Creek, the city was later named Melbourne to honor its first postmaster Cornthwaite John Hector, an Englishman who spent much of his early life in Melbourne, Australia. Hector, along with other early settlers of the community, is buried in the local Melbourne Cemetery

In the early 1940’s, a Naval Air Station was installed in Melbourne to train recently commissioned Navy and Marine pilots for their missions in World War II. The base remained open through 1946 and is currently the location where the Melbourne Orlando International Airport stands. The airport is a popular hub for international passengers, sailing out of the nearby Port Canaveral on their scheduled cruises.

Citizens of Melbourne and the surrounding community of Eau Gallie voted to merge governments in 1969, forming the modern-day, more densely populated city of Melbourne. Eau Gallie is the home of the Eau Gallie Arts District, located along the Indian River Lagoon. It is renowned today for its historic homes and buildings, art galleries, fine restaurants and boutiques.

The city of Melbourne is also noted for its parks and recreation. There are over 554.72 acres of park land in Melbourne, including 17 community parks, 13 neighborhood parks and five smaller city parks.  There are two public golf courses in Melbourne, as well as 21 additional private courses in the surrounding area.
