Miramar, a city in South Florida with a population of approximately 140,000 is part of the Metropolitan Miami area. Located just north of Miami-Dade County, Miramar sits in the western portion of Broward County, bordering on neighboring cities of Pembroke Pines, Hallandale and Hollywood. Miramar was founded in 1953 by developer A.L. Mailman. Mailman purchased 2.9 square miles of land from H.D. Perry, Sr. and built inexpensive homes that immediately sold out. In 1955 the city of Miramar with a population of 200 was incorporated and named after an area of Havana, Cuba. With a seal inscribed with the motto “Beauty and Progress,” the city of Miramar city adopted a Comprehensive Land Use Plan in 1972. The plan provided for orderly development of future growth in Miramar. Interestingly, two-thirds of the 31.3 square miles that currently comprise the land of Miramar is undeveloped. With the Florida Turnpike expansion and Interstate 75 opening in the western region of Miramar, the city’s population grew in vast numbers from the 1980’s to today. There were approximately 40,000 residents in 1990, one third the number of residents now in Miramar.
The city of Miramar also holds the distinction of being named One of 100 Best Places to Live in America ” by Money Magazine in both 2006 and in 2008. Miramar also boasts having the largest commerce park in the region which features a foreign trade zone. Spirit Airlines moved its corporate headquarters to Miramar in 1999, while both JL Audio and Arise Virtual Solutions also have corporate headquarters in Miramar. Miramar is also the home of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Miami field office and the General Services Administration office. Previously located in North Miami, the FBI moved the office to Miramar in late 2014. What’s more, WTVJ, the Miami NBC owned and operated TV station along with WSCV, the Telemundo station, also owned by NBC share their studios and administrative offices in Western Miramar, adjacent to Interstate 75
Miramar is also a cultural oasis for area residents and visitors with both the Miramar Cultural Center and Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater located within the city. The two venues offer numerous entertainment shows from live concerts by Boys II Men and Frankie Beverly and Maze to the opera Madame Butterfly and live theater productions, including On Your Feet.
