Pembroke Pines, a city in suburban South Florida, holds the distinction of being one of the fastest growing areas in the Metropolitan Miami area. Located 22 miles north of Miami, Pembroke Pines is the second largest city in Broward County with a population of over 171,000. Pembroke Pines is also the 11 th largest city in the state of Florida.
Incorporated in 1960, Pembroke Pines is named after Sir Edward Reed, a British Parliament member from the County of Pembroke in England, who was instrumental in a land deal involving the state of Florida in the 1800s. Pembroke Road was named in Reed’s honor at the time and when the city of Pembroke Pines was being incorporated, its mayor: Walter Smith Kipnis suggested the name Pembroke Pines, because of the vast number of pine trees growing adjacent to Pembroke Road.
Located we st of the city of Hollywood and adjacent to the Florida Turnpike, the community of Pembroke Pines was originally agricultural land occupied by dairy farms and was only a square mile in size. The city grew and acquired additional annexed land including Perry Airport, and the area that were the famed Hollywood Sportatorium and the Miami-Hollywood Motorsports Park. Today Pembroke Pines spans over 34.8 square miles and extends west of Interstate 75, which was completed in mid 1980s.
Pembroke Pines rapid growth can be attributed to many displaced Miami-Dade County residents, who moved north to Broward County after Hurricane Andrew in 1991. In fact, Pembroke Pines was third on the list of the fasting growing cities in the United States in 1999. Pembroke Pines is also the home of CB Smith, a 299 acre park with 83 RV sites, lakeside campgrounds, basketball areas, walking trails and a golf course. The park is also the home of the Annual KISS Country Chili Cookoff, which has taken place at CB Smith Park for the past 31 years and has hosted many top names in country music. Country legends Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, Mary Chapin Carter, Alan Jackson and Little Big Town have all appeared at the Pembroke Pines event.
There are also 73 golf courses located in or near Pembroke Pines, including the Grand Palms Resort and Golf Club, the Flamingo Lakes Country Club and the Pembroke Lakes Country Club.
Pembroke Pines is also th e home of the Pembroke Lakes Mall, a popular shopping destination in South Broward, as well as The Shops At Pembroke Gardens, an open air shopping venue.
